Reaching Back, Looking Forward

Looking back on this 6 weeks of class I can say that ENC 1102 has been one of the most helpful classes for my future. Not only in my life but in my future field of computer science. Academically I will be using what I have learned in this class to carry on to my other classes with Gordon rule, which is a required writing class. I will also be using these skills in non-Gordon rule classes since every class uses writing in some way. I will be able to use the knowledge I have gained of how to find reliable peer-reviewed academic sources and to write in any genre I am presented with. I know now that this class is just a stepping stone into my future of writing.

I not only have learned writing skills that will further help me into getting my degree of Computer Science but this knowledge learned in this short 6 weeks will also help me in the future while I am at my job. For Computer Science, after every new software or app is made the creator has to do a technical report explaining how reliable the software actually is so I will need to develop as a writer and be able to use that genre to be able to have my software be used by as many people as possible. Also Computer Scientists have to write a work summary of what their software actually does and the knowledge of audience will help me reach the targeted people. This work summary has to have less technical terms to reach the modern day working man and not in the language other Computer Scientists would understand. Before this class I believed Writing would be such a minuscule part of my life/career but now I see that writing will be a major part of my life for the rest of my life.

Thank you for a great semester Mr. Bedsole.

Distribution, Circulation, Templates

When making my MA.3 I had no intentions of the project to be circulated after the distribution. But after the hard work I put into it I really hope it does. The email I wrote to the state senator can be circulated by it being forwarded around or if he so chooses to talk about the subject to his followers that is another way it can be circulated. The obituary and PSA are another story when it comes to circulation. The only way I really see them being sent around after distribution is to be posted to websites or blogs of other people that are on the topic of LSD or LSD abuse.

I could plan for the circulation of my project in multiple ways. For the email I can address Rubio and tell him to send it to as many people as he can to get the word out. For the PSA and the obituary I can put tags on the links so if anything is searched in Google or any other websites it will be found in the search for other people to use them. Hopefully one day these assignments are found so they can be circulated.

Genre

A genre that I use everyday is a tweet.  A tweet is an idea of a person or an update on a person's life. Tweets are found on the website twitter where people are following each other to see their tweets. The audience of tweets are the followers and a younger generation of people. Most people with twitters range from the ages 13-30 so the tweets are aimed at that age. The audience expects these tweets to be short and somewhat entertaining. Each tweet is constrained to 140 characters keeping all of the tweets extremely short. Tweets also have a new idea called "hashtags." This new idea is basically putting the number sign before words and this makes the website put tweets into different sections of the website and allow more people to connect that share the same values and ideas.

Tweets are just like facebook statuses in a sense because they are about each individuals lives and are supposed to entertain. Tweets are also made to inform or persuade just like facebook statuses. Also these social networks are made so you follow or friend people you care about. Every social network is similar in this sense of finding friends or similar people to get information. This is the same for facebook, tumblr, and myspace.

Knowledge and Belief

In the world today there is knowledge everywhere we look. It's being taught daily in schools or found on the world wide web. The question is whether knowledge is constructed or discovered. My belief, with my not to expert opinion, is that is a combination of the two ideas. Something has to be discovered in a sense but the said thing also has to be questioned. Look at the pyramids of Egypt as an example; we gained knowledge by finding them in the dessert but scientists and archaeologists questioned why and how these giant wonders of the world were created. Our society has gained knowledge from questioning things and pushing our limits.
We develop new technologies and new inventions in this same way. We don't just say we want something and it magically is made. People develop new inventions and technologies to make life easier and make money. Our society has to keep questioning and learning new ways of doing things.

Deploying Writer

Rhetorical analysis is something I've also been made to do will writing in english classes but this is the first time I've ever sat down and thought about it. Rhetorical analysis may be boring but it does well with the audience. It really breaks down the information being analyised and points out the authors true meaning. It helps see what the author is truley trying to do with the piece of work.

There are a couple cons to rhetorical analysis though. A rhetorical anaylisis is trying to persuade people to do things so some information will be left out that could influence the audience otherwise. An example of this would be an advertisment on the television that was trying to sell the best cakes. The one cake company advertising company would say everything that was better but keep out how the other product is better. This is basically the same as a rhetorical analysis. Another con is that you can't have your true opinion in the paper because it is the view of the author.

What is Writing?

Writing defined in the dictionary is the activity or skill of marking coherent words on paper and composing text. Writing nowadays consists of a 140 characters maximum limit. Writing today isn't seen as an essential skill when it comes to normal day life. In that sense the topic isn't scratching down a grocery list but writing novels. The thing is writing doesn't have to be a novel; there are things that can be written to express yourself such as blogs that are very easy to do. When it comes to myself I will not need writing in my major since I am getting into Computer Science. The only thing I will be typing is zeros and ones for a while. That doesn't mean my writing will stop though. I can keep expressing myself through writing any way that I wish. I will be honest, I hate writing. After math it is my least favorite thing to do when it comes to education. The only time I remember enjoy writing was in elementary school when the teacher put up a topic on the whiteboard and we were given free time to write fiction stories and let our imaginations wander. But my enjoyment for writing died when I reached middle school and was made to write only nonfiction papers. Maybe one day I will enjoy writing again and hopefully soon because it seems I will have a lot of writing to do this summer.
